O Antiphons Advent Wreath

November 2022

Beginning with 'O Sapientia', the O Antiphons are the Magnificat antiphons used in vespers in the Divine Office during the week leading up to Christmas, and they refer to different titles for the Messiah rooted in the Old Testament.

Carved along the bottom of the wreath and accented in gold, the O Antiphons form the base for this advent wreath.

Spacing the stands are four walnut carvings of poinsettias and pine needles, evergreen plants commonly used in Christian imagery.

The green candle stands are made of scagliola, an ancient art technique using plaster and natural pigments to imitate marble. Scagliola is commonly found in churches and other historical buildings covering columns, ceilings, and other architectural structures where marble would be impractical.

Each candle stand is marked with an oval wooden cabochon, three in purple heart (a naturally violet wood) and one in cherry (a naturally rose-colored wood), indicating the four weeks of Advent. The candles are not wax, but refillable oil, to prevent mess and to extend the lifespan of the candles.

The ‘O Antiphons’ advent wreath is two feet in diameter and is available for purchase. Please email for details.
